Significant Other

Many couples find it difficult to find a word, which they can use to refer to their partners. Before getting engaged their partner was simply the boyfriend or girlfriend yet after the engagement many prefer to refer to their respective partner in a more special way.

There isn’t actually much choice. The partner is the fiancé, but many find this word a bit too strong to use in public. Many times this word isn’t easy to use in normal conversation.

Some will remain with this difficulty until the partner becomes the husband or wife. That’s an easy way out! Others refer to their future husband as “the man I’m going to marry”.

Some tackle the problem with humour. The partner can be called “my counterpart” or else “my other” or “better half”.
