      The Marriage Grant

This information has been provided by the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity

 

 

A person who marries and who fulfills the criteria set out by the Social Security Act will be eligible to a Marriage Grant of €227.21 (Lm97.54).  This grant is paid per person, ie: to both the husband and wife.

 

 

How to Apply

In order to apply for the Marriage Grant, the person must fill in the respective application form, which can be downloaded from the Ministry of Social Policy’s website – click here

Application Form for Marriage Grant has to reach the Department of Social Security not later than six months after the marriage date.

 

 

Documents required

Normally, when applying for the Marriage Grant, there is no need to present a marriage certificate, provided that the marriage was registered in Malta. However, when a marriage cannot be verified with official records, the marriage certificate will be required.

 

 

Processing fees/charges

No processing fees are involved in applying for this service.

 

 

Back office process

Once a claim is received, it is registered. An assessment of the contributions paid is made, and the other eligibility criteria are verified. The claimant is then informed about whether his/her claim was accepted or rejected. In the case of the former, payment is then effected.

Q: IS THE MARRIAGE GRANT GIVEN TO THE COUPLE OR TO THE INDIVIDUAL SPOUSES?

 

A: Both husband and wife are entitled to the Marriage Grant, provided that they both fulfill the eligibility criteria for such benefit.

    

 

Q: WHAT HAPPENS IF A PERSON REMARRIES?

A: A person who legally contracts marriage on more than one occasion shall be entitled to a Marriage Grant in respect of each marriage on condition that between one marriage and another s/he was employed/self-employed/self-occupied for a at least six months and was paying the contributions for that same period.

 

 

Q: CAN A CLAIM FOR MARRIAGE GRANT BE REJECTED?

A: Yes a claim can be rejected. In this case, the claimant is informed in writing. S/he may appeal against the Director of Social Security’s decision before the Social Security Umpire.

However, appeals may be lodged only on particular articles of law or important principles emerging from the Director’s decision to reject the claim. The appeal must be lodged in writing within 30 days from the date of the notice by which the claimant is informed that the claim is rejected.  

The written appeal has to be presented to the Secretary to the Umpire, Department of Social Security, Block C, Beltissebh, Floriana FRN 1700.

    

 

Q: WHAT IS THE RATE OF THE MARRIAGE GRANT?

A: The Marriage Grant is paid as a lump sum of €227.21 (Lm97.54) per person, to both husband and wife.
