Obtaining the Marriage Certificates

Subsequently, Marriage Certificates may be obtained by application to the Civil Status Section, Public Registry, 26, Old Treasury Street, Valletta.   You can also apply online on http://www.certifikati.gov.mt

Formal Extracts cost Lm1.00 each and Full Copies of the original Act of Marriage cost Lm2 each.

There exist no arrangements between this Registry and the Registries of other countries for the registration in those countries of marriages which take place in Malta between two foreign nationals or between Maltese and other nationals.

Therefore, if such couples are required to register their marriage in any other country outside Malta, they should effect this registration themselves in the manner described by that particular country’s laws.

After the Wedding Celebration

Immediately after the wedding celebration has taken place, the celebrant reads the certificate aloud to both of you to make sure there are no misprints or irregularities. Then, together with the witnesses and the celebrant, the marriage certificate is signed in the following order:

1.      The bride

2.      The groom

3.      The witnesses

4.      The celebrant

Important:  The bride signs her maiden surname and not her ‘new’ surname.

A copy of the certificate is kept in the church’s archives while the parish priest sends another copy to the Public Registry.
